At YU, it is our goal to provide you with a variety of Yoga Styles from which to choose. We know that different things appeal to different people and that, depending on the day, you might need different things from your practice. Explore the possibilities!
Hatha Yoga
In Hatha Yoga we combine postures, breath awareness, meditation and relaxation in order to develop physical and mental balance, strength and flexibility. There is a strong emphasis on alignment, and precise instructions are given to ensure students’ safety and progress. Props are used when needed to allow all students to gain maximum benefit from the postures.
Dynamic Hatha Yoga
In Dynamic Hatha Yoga music is often used to create the experience of Yoga as a dance of breath and rhythm. We concentrate on balancing opposing pairs such as: strength and fluidity, circulation and centering, activity and receptivity. Every class offers the complete spectrum of rhythms from meditative and rejuvenating to challenging and empowering, to create whole body transformation. Dynamic Hatha Yoga is also known as Vinyasa Flow Yoga.
Wind-down Yoga
Wind-down Yoga has been described as “active relaxation”. These classes usually begin with a short active warm up to create heat in the body and set up the required conditions for letting go. In the restorative postures props are used to support the body so that no physical effort is required. The resulting deep relaxation has a therapeutic and rejuvenating effect on mind and body. It is the perfect antidote to a busy lifestyle, and has been shown to reduce the effects of stress-related illness. Wind-down Yoga is also known as Restorative Yoga.
Kirtan
Kirtan is a powerful yoga technique that channels emotions in a positive way, leaving you feeling very uplifted and connected to your Self and humanity. It has been described as the most effective way to get a natural high! We aim to run Kirtan evenings as a monthly event. This will create an opportunity to meet those in your yoga class off the mat, and to connect with others from Wellington’s diverse yoga community. We hope these evenings will be attended by anyone interested in creating and experiencing connection, regardless of their style of practice. Kirtan is not only for yoga enthusiasts; you’re most welcome to bring the whole family. Children in particular resonate really well with the singing, and babies love it too! So if you are looking for opportunities to involve your whole family in your yoga lifestyle this programme is for you!
